Schnitzel-land

Allow me to briefly take you back a few days to the magnificent city of music, dreams and food. Famous for Apfelstrudel, Sacher Torte, Würstel and most importantly Schnitzel.

Vienna possesses countless restaurants that serve you Schnitzel. But let me tell you, nowhere will you find something so marvellous and mind-blowing as here. Mr. Figlmüller is the godfather of the Schnitzel and maintained this culinary ecstasy since 1905.

The boy and I woke up at 11 a.m., skipped breakfast and made our way straight to the taverna on Wollzeile, nestled right behind the beautiful St. Stephen’s Cathedral. The boy, having made the restaurant his second livingroom warned me about the huge queue which we would have to face.

Although we arrived there at 11.30 on the dot.

We waited..
and waited…
and…
waited.

We got inside 2 hours later, having ducked into the coffee shop opposite to save our toes.

Whoever said the best things in life are worth waiting for was a smart man.
With all the anticipation of a groom at the altar my eyes flicked towards the door at the smallest suggestion of food. Then I saw her. Opps I meant it. In contrast to other Schnitzel places, Figlmüller only makes use of the best pork cuts, namely, the rose or tenderloin, a choice back piece which hardly puffs during frying (making its diameter 30 cm- “toilet seat size” as the hardcore clientele call it). Next, the coating is crowned with very special “imperial” breadcrumbs baked especially for Figlmüller, adding to the crispiness. Lastly the Schnitzel is put into 3 different pans with different temperatures, to ensure its uniqueness.
Ok, enough about the Science….

As a side we both ordered a traditional home-made potato salad. Unique in its sweetness and outrageously satisfying, washed down with a glass of the famous Austrian soft drink, Almdudler, consisting of grape and apple juice (flavoured with herbs).

Apologies for the paltry number of photos, but after the first few delicious mouthfuls taking pictures was no longer on my agenda.

All I have left to say is you MUST. MUST. MUST. MUST GO.

Although I trust you will go for their Schnitzel, there are plenty of other Viennese specialities on the menu for you to choose from.

p.s. If you want to squeeze a little workout into your pilgrimage and then make sure you climb the medieval steps to the St Stephen’s Cathedral; not for the elderly, infirm or fainthearted. Not just a great way to burn the calories but the beauty of the view is worth dying for.

  1. Hi Nicole,

    that’s what I call a proper Schnitzel :-)
I am a veggie, but I believe it tasted deliciously! I think I have never been waiting 2 hours in front of a restaurant (only exception Schutzenfestzelt auf der Wiesen at 6 o’ clock in the morning, ha ha) it looks that it is perfectly worth it!!
